A great "mini" fest just for you!
Since 2003 it has been our mission to create programs that highlight a broad variety of genres within film. This year is no different, you will see that we have carefully curated shows (we call them "Mix Tapes") to simulate the in-person experience. Each "Mix Tape" show is a variety of films, pre configured for your viewing pleasure. The shows are categorized into themes and/or "mini" festivals which give the viewer a well rounded film festival experience. This method is a great way to see a wide spectrum of films you may have overlooked in the "2020 Films List".

Tomorrow

Tomorrow
"Tomorrow" features my grandmother's Chicago videos from the 1950's. It tells the story of decades, all in five minutes. Highlights include Kiddieland near Chicago! My grandfather had recently returned from WWII not too long before these videos were taken. He survived D-Day. Yet he could still smile. Before, he held a rifle. Now he held his little girls. When is tomorrow? How does what we do today affect tomorrow? And how can we preserve what was? 65 years after my grandmother took these movies, and 13 years after her death, "Tomorrow" shows that life is, after all, a beautiful circle.

A nine years old intersex child wonders: where do I belong?
Why is it so important to be a boy or a girl? Wen Long naturally and candidly explains that she was born intersex. The adopted nine-year-old wears both boys’ and girls’ clothes and plays with toys intended for both genders. The only problem is that others don’t know what to think of this. People say: ‘If you are boy and girl at the same time, you are basically nothing’. Wen Long isn’t interested in making a choice, but mainly just wants to be herself.  This insightful, playful documentary reveals how preposterous the imposed binary gender divide really is. Clothing, toys, toilets – everything is strictly separated. The societal taboo on intersex causes problems. A typical example is the fact that Wen Long’s teacher considers the subject unsuitable for children, even though it is an entirely natural phenomenon that also occurs in the animal kingdom. So why is it weird in humans?

The oldest man in the world doesn't know he secret to longevity but he does have a wealth of wisdom beyond how he’s lived for so many year
Bob Weighton was the oldest man in the world. He didn’t know the secret to his longevity but he did have a wealth of wisdom beyond how he lived for 112 years. Bob cared greatly for the environment and had a passion for woodwork using recycled materials. He also believed in the power of friendship to overcome prejudices and contribute to a more peaceful world. Bob lived in the same neighborhood as my Grandma and I decided to make a short film about him after hearing that he grew frustrated with media interviews primarily asking him about the secret to a long life. I wanted to share some of his perspectives on life. I believe that the older generation is not respected enough in our society and that young people have much to learn from listening to the insights of our elders. Bob died peacefully in his sleep on May 28, 2020. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet Bob and create a short film about his inspiring outlook on life.
